How to Prepare Your Nashville Garage
for Epoxy: Pre-Install Checklist

Everything Nashville homeowners need to do - and not do - before their epoxy floor install day. A 10-point checklist, common prep mistakes, and Nashville-specific conditions that affect your install.

Epoxy floor installation fails for one of two reasons: bad chemistry or bad surface preparation. Bad chemistry is our problem - we control the materials and mix ratios. Bad surface preparation is often a shared problem, and a large portion of it happens before our crew arrives. Homeowners who understand what the floor needs to look like on install morning - and what conditions or contaminants can derail the job - end up with better floors, faster installs, and fewer callbacks.

This checklist covers every step Nashville homeowners should take in the days and hours before their install appointment, along with the mistakes we see most often in Nashville garages that could have been avoided.

The Pre-Install Checklist

1. Clear the Entire Garage Floor
Every movable item must be off the floor the night before install. Vehicles, lawn equipment, storage bins, shelving units, and freestanding tool chests all need to be relocated. Wall-mounted cabinets and fixed workbenches can stay - we work around them - but the concrete beneath them cannot be coated.
2. Degrease Visible Oil Stains
Our diamond grinder removes the surface layer and most contamination. But heavy oil that has penetrated deep into the slab can survive the grind and compromise adhesion at depth. Apply a concrete degreaser to obvious stain areas 24–48 hours before install and rinse thoroughly. Don't use dish soap - it leaves a residue.
3. Disclose Previous Coatings or Sealers
If your garage floor has ever had any previous coating - even a single coat of floor paint from years ago - tell us before install day. Existing coatings require full removal before epoxy application. A quick tap test (knocking on the concrete and listening for hollow sounds) can reveal previous coatings that are delaminating beneath the surface.
4. Note Any Water or Moisture Entry Points
Walk the garage perimeter after the next rain before your install appointment. Note where water enters - door thresholds, wall-floor joints, floor drains, low spots. Nashville's clay soil means water management issues are common. Share this information with your installer so moisture vapor emission testing can be prioritized in those zones.
5. Mark Active Cracks or Spalling
Walk the floor and mark any cracks wider than a hairline (1/8″+), areas of spalling, or hollow-sounding sections with painter's tape. Active structural cracks need repair before coating; cosmetic hairline cracks are normal in Nashville's clay-heavy soil and will be filled during prep. Don't try to fill cracks yourself - use of the wrong filler can contaminate the bond.
6. Remove Floor Drain Covers and Check for Obstructions
If your garage has a floor drain, remove the cover and check that it's clear. We protect drains during installation, but a blocked drain that backs up after install can create moisture problems under the coating. Check that downspout extensions lead away from the garage - Nashville's rain events can push significant water toward foundations.
7. Ensure Electrical Access and Ventilation
Our diamond grinding equipment requires 240V power - confirm your garage has an accessible 240V outlet or that your main panel is accessible if we need to set up temporary power. Open all garage windows and side doors before crew arrival for ventilation. Garages with limited airflow require additional time to let epoxy fumes clear between coats.
8. Check Concrete Age - New Slabs Need Extra Time
Concrete must fully cure before epoxy application - a minimum of 28 days for new slabs, and ideally 60–90 days for Nashville's humid conditions. If your garage slab was poured recently (during a renovation, addition, or new build), confirm the pour date with your installer before booking. Young concrete has excess moisture that will cause epoxy to fail.
9. Plan for Vehicle Storage During Cure
Vehicles cannot return to the garage for 24 hours after installation. Plan alternative parking - street, driveway, neighbor's garage - before your install date, not the morning of. This is the single most common scheduling problem: a homeowner assumes vehicles can return the same evening and they cannot.
10. Keep Pets and Children Out on Install Day
Grinding dust, epoxy fumes, and wet coatings are all hazards. Plan for children and pets to be in a separate part of the house or away from the property entirely during the install. Wet epoxy with paw prints or footprints on it cannot be sanded out - it requires a partial or full recoat.

Nashville-Specific Conditions to Watch For

Nashville's climate and geology create prep challenges that don't exist in drier or less clay-heavy markets. Three conditions in particular affect how we approach surface preparation:

Nashville Clay Soil & Moisture Vapor
Nashville sits on expansive clay soil that holds and releases water with the seasons. This drives moisture vapor up through concrete slabs at rates that can exceed safe epoxy application thresholds - especially in spring and early summer. We test every garage using ASTM F1869 calcium chloride testing before application. Readings above 3 lbs/1,000 sqft/24 hrs trigger a vapor barrier primer addition.

Pro tip: If your garage floor feels damp on summer mornings but dry by afternoon, you likely have elevated MVE. Mention this to your installer before the appointment - it doesn't disqualify your floor from epoxy, but it changes the system specification and cost.

Summer Temperature & Application Windows

Nashville summers regularly exceed 90°F by midday, and concrete surface temperatures in a south-facing garage can reach 110°F+. Epoxy and polyaspartic topcoats have maximum application temperature limits - typically 90°F for epoxy base coats and 95°F for polyaspartic. Installs scheduled during peak summer are started earlier in the morning (crews often arrive at 6:30–7:00 AM) to complete grinding and base coat application before midday heat peaks.

Post-Rain Surface Moisture

Do not schedule epoxy installation within 24–48 hours of a major rain event if your garage has any known drainage issues. Nashville's spring season can produce 4–6 inch rain events that saturate clay soil rapidly. Surface moisture on the concrete - even visible dampness at the wall-floor joint - is enough to cause adhesion failure in the applied base coat.

Common Pre-Install Mistakes in Nashville Garages

Using Muriatic Acid to "Prep" the Floor
Acid etching opens the surface but also raises pH and leaves mineral deposits. Diamond grinding is superior in every respect and is the only prep method we use. Do not acid-etch before our appointment - it creates additional work and can require neutralization before coating.
Applying a "Primer" Coat Themselves
Some homeowners apply a box-store epoxy primer hoping to help adhesion. This almost always makes things worse - the DIY primer must be fully ground off before our professional system can be applied, adding time and cost to the job.
Power-Washing the Floor the Day Before
Pressure washing introduces a significant amount of water into the slab. On a concrete slab that already has marginal MVE readings, doing this 12–18 hours before install can push moisture vapor to levels that trigger a vapor barrier requirement or force a rescheduled appointment.
Leaving Cardboard on the Floor
Cardboard traps moisture against concrete. Garages that store boxes directly on the slab often have elevated moisture readings beneath those storage areas. Clear boxes and cardboard at least 48 hours before install to allow the slab to equalize.

On Install Day: What to Expect

A standard Nashville two-car garage epoxy install runs 6–8 hours from crew arrival to final topcoat application. Here is the typical timeline:

AM / 7–9
Diamond grind, MVE test, crack fill
AM / 9–11
Base coat + chip broadcast
PM / 1–3
Scrape, sand, topcoat application

The garage is typically accessible by early evening for foot traffic. Vehicles cannot return for 24 hours. Full chemical resistance (ability to withstand oil spills, floor jack contact) takes 72 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to clean my Nashville garage floor before epoxy installation?
Your installer will diamond grind the concrete surface mechanically on install day, which removes most contamination. However, you should remove standing oil and grease from major spill areas before the installer arrives - heavy oil contamination that penetrates deep into the slab can remain below the grind depth and cause adhesion failures. A degreaser applied 24–48 hours before the appointment helps. You do not need to scrub the entire floor; focus on visible staining.
How far in advance should I clear my garage before epoxy installation?
The entire garage floor must be clear on install day. We recommend clearing the garage the evening before. This means vehicles, storage items, shelving units, cabinets, and any freestanding equipment must all be moved. Permanently anchored items (wall-mounted cabinets, built-in workbenches) do not need to be moved, but the installer will work around them and the area beneath cannot be coated.
Does Nashville humidity affect when I can get epoxy installed?
Humidity affects cure time and surface temperature more than it restricts scheduling. In Nashville's summer (June–August), dew point can reach 70°F+ on humid mornings, which affects early-morning application windows for polyaspartic topcoats. ProEpoxy monitors dew point on install days and adjusts the application schedule accordingly. Installs are not cancelled for humidity; we adjust timing to start surface application after morning humidity peaks.
Can I stay in my house during epoxy floor installation?
Yes. Epoxy floor installation is a garage-only job and does not require you to leave your home. Some smell from the epoxy base coat is normal in the first hour of application - if your garage is attached and you're sensitive to fumes, opening interior garage-door windows or running an air purifier near the door-to-house threshold is helpful. Polyaspartic topcoats have significantly lower VOC than traditional epoxy topcoats and are much less odorous.
What should I tell my epoxy installer before the Nashville appointment?
Key things to disclose before your install appointment: (1) any previous floor coatings or sealers - these must be fully removed before epoxy application; (2) known water or moisture issues, especially after heavy rain; (3) any areas of flaking, spalling, or active cracks; (4) whether the garage is used for heavy vehicles, motorcycles with kickstands, or vehicle lifts - these may require thicker topcoat or different system specification.
